Michaela Murray, PGPA Clinical Pharmacy Technician

Michaela Murray has worked at Pennine GP Alliance (PGPA) for over four years as a Clinical Pharmacy Technician in the Upper Calder Valley. Her role focuses on patient safety, supporting people to understand their medicines, and reducing the risks that can arise during hospital discharge.

“Helping patients understand their medicines and supporting them after a hospital discharge is so important. Patients often return home with changes to their medication that can feel overwhelming. By contacting them early, explaining what’s changed, and answering their questions, I can reduce confusion and help prevent hospital readmissions.”

Michaela explains that her role requires a wide range of skills, from good communication and problem-solving to professional judgement and strong organisational ability. She highlights that it is just as important to be able to work independently as it is to be part of a multi-disciplinary team. “Above all, it’s about caring enough to make a positive difference.”

Before joining PGPA, Michaela worked both in community pharmacy and as a hospital clinical ward pharmacy technician. “Working in the hospital sector has given me an insight in to what can go wrong in terms of transition of care and the importance of good communication between different care settings.” This experience has helped her spot where patients may struggle following discharge and take steps to prevent problems.

Reflecting on achievements, she says: “I have managed to improve and support of many a patient with not taking incorrect doses, stopped or changed does at point of discharge back to home.” She recalls helping a carer whose husband had dementia: “Been able to get the ball rolling for supporting not only the dementia patient but the patient’s carer, having much better outcome for them both. Getting the correct professionals involved. Its all about working together and making patient better safe outcome sooner.”

Michaela feels settled in her role but remains motivated to keep developing. “I feel content within my role but will always strive to make a difference for patients and safe compliance and understanding of medication. And making a difference to discharge back to patients’ home.” She credits her team with supporting her to achieve this: “Having the right team around me really matters, it means patients get the best possible care.”

Outside of work, Michaela enjoys spending time with her grandchildren, walking her dog, running, and watching her son perform.
