To celebrate International Day of Older People (IDOP), a community event was held at Mixenden Activity Centre with our Ageing Well Practitioner. The event ran for 2.5 hours and offered attendees the chance to connect with local services, enjoy entertainment, and participate in social activities.
Attendee Profile
The group was predominantly over the age of 65, with a near 50/50 split of men and women, though slightly more women attended. A few local residents under 65 also joined to see what the centre had to offer, enjoying coffee and a social catch-up.
Key Activities and Outcomes
- Attendees could speak with representatives from each service and collect leaflets about local services and events.
- Blood pressure reviews were offered by NH PCN; six guests had their blood pressure checked. One attendee was signposted to their GP for a further review.
- Light-touch hand massage was provided by Overgate Hospice, which was enjoyed by several guests.
- Entertainment featured a husband-and-wife singing duo who engaged the crowd with props, encouraging dancing and waving of flags.
- A free raffle offered supermarket vouchers as main prizes, and an alternative Bingo game awarded sweet treats.
- Craft activities included pottery painting, which some guests enjoyed.
- Refreshments of soup, sandwiches, and cake were provided by a local catering establishment.
- NH PCN received three referrals from the event, with follow-up phone calls planned.
