Background
The Basement Project in Halifax supports vulnerable individuals, including those experiencing homelessness or complex social needs. Regular outreach helps build trust and improves access to health services.
Intervention
On Wednesday 10th December 2025 a multidisciplinary team delivered flu and COVID-19 vaccinations, health checks, and lifestyle advice. Activities included:
- Observations (BP, weight) and lifestyle advice by the on-site nurse
- Individual consultations for vaccinations, health queries, and guidance
- “Working the room” during breakfast to engage attendees informally

Achievements
- Vaccinations: 14 flu vaccines administered; 0 COVID-19 vaccines (no attendees eligible)
- Health checks & advice: 24 clients received BP, weight monitoring, or lifestyle guidance
- Clinical interventions included: prescription for injection site cream, diet advice, and tailored support for vulnerable individuals (homeless, mobility issues, medication management, lifestyle advice for recently retired client)
Outcomes and Lessons Learned
- Positive engagement with attendees, including those not receiving vaccines
- Strengthened relationships between central team, on-site nurse, and attendees
- Effective multidisciplinary support in a friendly, non-judgemental environment
- Familiarity and trust with attendees enhance engagement
- Flexible, supportive approaches allow meaningful health advice beyond vaccination
- Informal engagement (“working the room”) complements structured clinical care
