It’s 40 years since the first National No Smoking day on 13 March 1984. But there are over 5.3 million adults in England who still smoke, and smoking remains the single largest preventable cause of death in England.
Up to two in three smokers will die from the effects of long-term smoking.
In 2022-23, there were an estimated 400,000 hospital admissions in England due to smoking.
But the good news is that smoking rates have dropped considerably since the first No Smoking Day 40 years ago.
This year we are asking GP practices to help us with the 2024 No Smoking Day campaign which aims to encourage people to quit by offering free NHS resources and advice.
You can help Calderdale be part of the change and help build a smokefree generation by promoting this campaign in your practices.
